Record-breaking rainfall in April 2020 required a water transfer in coordination with the City of San Diego from Lake Hodges Reservoir for the first time in three years. The transfer, from Lake Hodges to Olivenhain Reservoir, helped member agencies manage the rising reservoir level from predicted storms. The Lake Hodges Projects are part of the San Diego County Water Authority’s Emergency & Carryover Storage Project, a system of reservoirs, interconnected pipelines and pumping stations designed to make water available to the San Diego region in the event of an interruption to imported water deliveries. The transfer demonstrated the county’s successful water storage and management planning during years of increasingly unpredictable climate patterns.
